When Crickets Cry - Book Review
January 6th 2008 07:11
When Crickets Cry by Charles Martin is one of the best books I've ever read. I really wasn't expecting anything great when I picked it up at the bookstore. I just wanted something to read.
I started reading it at supper on Thursday (about 7 pm) and didn't put it down until I finished - about 4 am Friday.
I don't want to give away the story - so I'll just give a very brief description. It's about a man who is hiding from his past. He meets a little girl who needs a heart transplant. He is in a unique position to help, but that will mean facing his past and revealing who he really is.
In the end, he does reveal himself, and she gets her transplant, though the surgery doesn't go as expected.
My favorite supporting character is the owner of the local tavern. The chapter that describes him and his establishment - and business practices - is hillarious!
I highly recommend this book. If you get a chance, pick up a copy and be ready to read it through.
