Caucus in Texas - My First Time
March 6th 2008 00:24
Well, I posted yesterday about how excited I was to participate in my first Texas caucus. (It's actually a Precinct Convention - but it's the same thing.)
It was interesting. But I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed.
I live in a rural precinct in East Texas, but I still expected things to be run in a proper manner. It seemed like no one really knew what was going on, or what we were supposed to do. It started out in a way that seemed right, by what I had read about the procedure, but quickly turned to chaos!
We did finally manage to get everyone signed in, and divided up by who supported whom. The only thing is, so many people thought all they had to do was vote again, then leave. There's supposed to be more to it than that. We were supposed to choose delegates to the County Convention - where the process would be continued to choose delegates to the state convention - and so on. At first, no one wanted to be a delegate. And to make matters worse, our chairperson didn't know the exact number of delegates we were supposed to choose.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, the Republicans were having a nice, orderly, quiet meeting.
Finally, we got a list of names of people willing to serve as delegates, and those who hadn't left the building decided to just let the chairperson sort out her number problems, and assign delegates and alternates from the list. This isn't exactly how it was supposed to go, but everyone seemed to be satisfied with it.
I got a phone call this morning telling me I was one of the chosen delegates.
I sure hope the county convention is run in a more orderly fashion.
