The Change We Need
November 5th 2008 23:17
Now that the election is over, and we have a president-elect committed to change, what do we have to look forward to?
My favorite issue this election was health care. It's the one most immediately affecting my family. Here's what our new president has in mind:
Affordable and Accessible Health Insurance
His plan builds on the healthcare system we already have in place - the same doctors and hospitals and insurance companies - but makes it affordable and accessible for everyone. I think this is a good thing. (Though I'd prefer a single-payer system, personally.) Obama's plan assures that every American can get insurance. Right now, that is not the case. There are millions who are denied coverage by the insurance companies because of medical conditions. These are the ones who need it the most!
Lower Health Care Costs
The government negotiates for lower costs for medicaid, medicare, and military health care recipients. With Obama's plan, they will be able to negotiate these same lower costs for everyone. That means everyone will pay less (except the insurance and drug companies). This is a good thing, too. Health care costs have skyrocketed, they need to come back down to earth.
Preventative Services
Obama's plan will require coverage of preventative services. Preventative services prevent higher costs by educating people about diseases and helping them learn how to avoid them. It also catches diseases in the early stages, when they are easier and less costly to treat.
The Change We Need. Not just a campaign slogan - but the truth. We DO need change, especially in the area of health care. Obama's plans are good. They are good for everyone.
