"Recount" revisited
October 9th 2008 16:15
I watched the HBO Films Recount - The Story of the 2000 Presidential Election last night. Though it was not the first film I've seen on the subject, I was just as moved by it as I was by the original fiasco. I was even surprised to find out new aspects of the situation I had not heard or read about previously.
As Election Day approaches, I hope and pray that nothing of this sort occurs this year. My wish for election reform is renewed, though I know that there is no hope for anything meaningful to happen before this election, and probably not in my lifetime. (I'm not old, I just know how slowly change happens in this country.)
If you haven't yet seen this film, I highly recommend it. At least visit HBO's site and read about it.
I know that some of the problems of the 2000 election were "fixed" before the 2004 election. Some, but by no means all. There are many who believe the 2004 election was stolen from Kerry. (See Rolling Stone article.) I'm not sure it was as close as the 2000 election, but who knows for sure? Is there any way that the 2008 election can be stolen?
CNN projections show that Obama will only have to take one of the states still up for grabs in order to win, and that McCain will have to take them all. Florida and Ohio - two of the controversial states in the last two elections - are apparently still up for grabs. A win in either will cinch it for Obama, according to CNN. (Assuming nothing changes in the states with what seem to be solid leads in either direction.)
There are many who believe this one will be stolen too.
"2008 Election will be stolen, here's how"
"Is the 2008 Election Already Being Stolen?"
"Will the 2008 elections be stolen like 2000 and 2004?"
"Will 2008 election be stolen?"
As Americans, we must make sure our votes count. Less than a month remains until election day. I don't really know the answer for this election. I'll just hope for the best. For our future, however, we really have to make sure our voices are heard. Our election process is in bad enough shape as it is, we should at least be able to be confident that the current rules - bad as they are - are followed, and our votes count as much as constitutionally possible.
