Small Town Parades
December 20th 2007 15:37
If you are from a small town, you've probably been to a parade. We have them for all sorts of occasions, but nearly every small town in East Texas has a Christmas parade. (And, yes, we still call them CHRISTMAS parades- not HOLIDAY parades.)
Nearly the entire month of December can be filled with these festivities. The local schools, churches, clubs, and organizations all make floats. The cheerleaders and bands all line up, and the fun begins.
Now most towns will block off the courthouse square or main street for a parade route. Recently, however, I came upon a town that had four lanes of a major highway blocked - for over an hour - with the parade.
I'm all for the fun of a parade, but please -- don't block a major highway, keeping people who are just traveling through held up. If you do, at least have a clearly marked detour route posted.
