College Choices - part II
October 13th 2008 10:17
Well, we visited another school this weekend. Not one on his top-three list, but I think it’s moving up the chain now. (If you haven’t read my previous post, College Search, you might want to for the background information.)
We went to Texas A&M - Commerce. (My son is a huge UT fan, so I was surprised he was willing to even look at A&M - he explained that Commerce isn’t the Aggies, so it’s ok. LOL)
They don’t offer petroleum engineering, either. But, they offer industrial engineering - which will probably be a good choice - offering more employment choices upon graduation. It will still prepare him for the petroleum industry, or just about any industry.
In addition, they have what my son considers to be an awesome music department. He could be eligible for a music scholarship, even without a music major or minor - just for participating in the choir. Also, he is eligible to apply for the honors college, which will provide a full ride if he’s accepted! Being a state school, he is automatically accepted (to the school, not necessarily the honors college) just because he’s in the top 10% of his graduating class. He is actually in the top 5%!
The biggest plus, for him, is that his best friend is planning to go there as well.
He’s applied - in the early application process - to four other schools, so a decision won’t be made until he finds out what academic scholarships each offers him, but I think A&M - Commerce may now be his top choice. We’ll see.
