VP Debate - what are your thoughts?

October 3rd 2008 03:01
I was more impressed with Gov. Palin than I thought I would be, but not enough to change my mind. I would have voted for Sen. Biden for president, so there wasn't really much convincing needed there. I'd like to see what others thought about both - without any name calling or abusive comments, please. What issues are important to you, and how do you think the candidates did in answering questions about those issues? What did you like or dislike about their performances tonight?

I'm wondering if Gov. Palin was a cheerleader when she was younger. She smiled the entire night. Nothing wrong with that, just not what I'm used to seeing. I think she did a good job of connecting with "regular folks," but her stance on the issues that count to me didn't cut it. Probably, I'd like her better without John McCain. I just don't want four more years of the same.

I didn't like how she kept dodging the questions and returning to the energy issue. I agree it is important, and hope that whichever way the election goes we will, as a country, seek energy independence. As important as that issue is, she dodged questions about some equally if not more important issues. Also, did anyone notice she kept calling her opponent Senator O'Biden?

As for the issues that are important to me and my family, most importantly the wars and health care, I agree more strongly with the Obama-Biden ticket. I was impressed with Sen. Biden's answers, and his uncharacteristic self-restraint tonight.

I wasn't really satisfied with anyone's answers to the economic problems we are facing, as both sides support the bailout - but that wasn't really discussed much tonight, other than vague sound bites.

What do you think?

Oh - I forgot to mention the clincher. I refuse to vote for anyone who cannot (or will not) properly pronounce the word "nuclear." Sorry, Gov. Palin.

I thought Palin did very well. She challenged Biden time and again, but she did it with a smile. She is definitely charming and disarming. Personally, I like her a lot. I'm no McCain fan, though, so the ticket doesn't hold much appeal for me. I despise Obama, however. I'll probably vote third party.

I thought Biden did well. Palin did a good job of trying to draw him out. It probably took every ounce of restraint Biden had, but he kept a civil tongue. He is a good debater. Palin was there to match him every step of the way, though.

Where I thought Palin was best:
* She used Biden's own anti-Obama words against him.
* She did speak directly to the camera and the people.
* She challenged the free-spending GOP and even Bush (re: NCLB)
* She kept reiterating her status as a Washington outsider. That holds great appeal to a lot of people.

I think Biden had more substance and he was effective, but she was a breath of fresh air. She wasn't perfect, but she was more memorable and made a bigger impression.

Oh, yeah. Regarding "nuclear", did you vote for Carter? How about Clinton? Both had trouble with it as well. I don't like that pronunciation, either, but it looks like it's here to stay -- and has even gotten some grudging acceptance (unfortunately).

Well, I was too young to vote for Carter. I don't remember Clinton pronouncing it "nuculer," but I can't say either way on that. I didn't vote for him the first time, either - I voted third party that time. I did vote for Clinton his second term - I guess that particular pet peeve of mine hadn't fully matured yet.

Thanks for your comments.

I was too young to vote for/against Carter, too. My first vote was in 1988. I didn't vote for Clinton either time. It didn't have to do with his pronunciation of nuclear, though. I just liked Perot better both times.

In my post above, there's a link to a slate.com article about the mispronunciation of nuclear. I'll go back and try to highlight it.
